Administrative Professionals Day/Week started in 1952 and was originally called National Secretaries Week. It was created as a way to say thank you to secretaries for all of their hard work (and also with the hope of getting people to start careers as admins). U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer proclaimed the first National Secretaries Week on June 1-7, 1952 with June 4 being National Secretaries Day.
It wasn't until 2000 that the name was changed to Administrative Professionals Week/Day to give it a more modern feel. So be sure to celebrate the 8.9 million people* who work as admins this year.
